Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School –District of Columbia

The Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School prepares 350 culturally diverse pre-school and elementary school students in the District of Columbia to be leaders, scholars and responsible citizens who are committed to social justice. We teach children to think, speak, read, write and learn in two languages: English and French or English and Spanish. Literacy instruction and content instruction are delivered in both languages. Students in Pre-Kindergarten spend 90 percent of their day immersed in Spanish or French while Kindergarten through fifth grade spend 50 percent of their instructional time learning in each language.

Performs a variety of tasks leading to the development and education of students:

  • Creates appropriate differentiated learning environment:stimulating, active, safe, respectful, project-based learning
  • Teaches core subjects of language arts, math, science, social sciences or target language
  • Implements interdisciplinary/thematic activities
  • Involves students and parents as a resource in planning, peer assistance, school operations and service
  • Assesses and monitors student learning outcomes
  • Assures that activities use an array of community and other learning resources
  • Cooperates with the work of the instructional team
  • Infuses multicultural content into the instructional program
  • Infuses ELL specific strategies into learning activities
  • Infuses community service learning activities into the instructional program
  • In conjunction with Wellness and Arts Coordinators, infuses arts, health and physical education instruction into the instructional program

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education or equivalent. Fluency in English, French is required.  A minimum of one year of experience teaching young children preferred. Teaching certification is not required.
